Nalerigu, Ghana
The Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu, Ghana is a venerable and well respected Baptist mission hospital. It is in northern Ghana which is an arid, rural, poverty-stricken part of the country. Medical care is very limited in northern Ghana. Many of the people who live here are Muslim. The hospital is a beacon of light for the Gospel in this part of the world.
It is very difficult for the hospital to operate from year to year in this poor and rural area. It does receive some missionary and operational support from the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention; but, this makes up only a portion of what is required. BMDF volunteer healthcare professionals have ministered at the Baptist Medical Centre for many years where they have worked in support of the career missionaries who are assigned there.
The needs are so critical that BMDF offered to form a formal International Partnership with the hospital. This was accepted by the career missionary staff and International Mission Board administration. Doug Parkin, MD became the BMDF coordinator for the partnership in 2006.
God is at work in mighty ways in Nalerigu. BMDF has an open door to being involved with Him in the work there. Opportunities for prayer and involvement are:
- Two physicians to feel called to fill the career missionary positions currently open at the IMB.
- Ghanaian physicians and other national health professionals to be called by God to work on the staff of Baptist Medical Centre
- Health professionals to volunteer to serve in medical/ dental ministry through Baptist Medical Centre
- Members who feel called to be part of a “Friends of Nalerigu” network to provide ongoing support for healthcare ministry there
- Partnerships of US hospitals with Baptist Medical Centre for sharing of volunteers, equipment, expertise, staff, etc.
- Cooperation of the Ghana Baptist Convention with BMDF in supporting the work in Nalerigu and starting additional formal International Partnerships in Africa
- Regular donations of funds to support the ministry of Baptist Medical Centre
- Partnerships with US Churches to assist with the spiritual outreach and ongoing financial needs
- BMDF members from various states to sponsor ads in their respective state newspapers and other publications alerting physicians to the volunteer opportunities available at BMC
